FAQs
1. Which Cycle Japan tour is best for me?
It depends on what you want to see!
Cycle Osaka is ideal if you want to discover the energy, food and history of Japan's second city. It's a great introduction to Osaka and works particularly well for first-time visitors.
Cycle Kyoto is the choice for traditional Japan. Ride through historic neighbourhoods, temples, shrines and quieter parts of the ancient capital that are easy to miss on foot.
Cycle Hiroshima offers a different side of Japan, combining the history of Hiroshima and the Peace Memorial area with cycling, local food and beautiful scenery.
Cycle Kasagi is perfect if you're looking to escape the cities. Our e-bike tours take you into beautiful rural Kyoto, with rice fields, tea plantations, rivers and small villages.
2. Do I need to be fit?
Not particularly! You don't need to be a serious cyclist to join most of our tours.
Our rides are designed for ordinary people who are comfortable riding a bicycle. We travel at a relaxed pace, stop regularly and give you plenty of opportunities to take in the scenery.
3. What happens if it rains?
Japan has a rainy season, hot summers and the occasional typhoon, so we keep a close eye on the weather. We don't believe you should have to spend a day cycling through heavy rain. If conditions are unsuitable, we'll contact you and offer an alternative where possible or a refund in accordance with the relevant tour's weather policy.
Light rain doesn't necessarily mean your tour will be cancelled, so please don't assume the tour is off just because the forecast isn't perfect. We'll make the decision based on the actual conditions and the latest forecast.
The most important thing: keep an eye on your email before your tour, particularly when the weather looks uncertain.
4. What should I wear?
Comfortable clothes that you can easily cycle in are best. You don't need specialist cycling clothing. In summer, lightweight clothing, sunscreen and sunglasses are a good idea. In cooler months, layers work well. A light waterproof jacket is useful when the forecast is uncertain.
And please wear comfortable shoes — you'll be spending several hours on a bicycle.
5. Are the tours suitable for children?
Many of our tours are suitable for families, but the best option depends on the child's age, height, confidence and the particular route. For younger children, or families who would prefer a more relaxed experience, a private tour is often the best choice because we can adapt the route and pace to suit you.
6. Do I need travel insurance?
Yes. We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance for any trip to Japan.
7. Is cycling in Japan safe?
Yes. Cycling is a wonderful way to explore Japan, and our guides know the local roads, neighbourhoods and safest routes extremely well.
We avoid unnecessary traffic wherever possible and give a safety briefing before setting off. Your guide will also adjust the pace and route to the ability of the group.
As with cycling anywhere, you'll need to follow your guide's instructions and Japan's road rules.
8. What kind of bikes do you use?
We use good-quality bikes selected for the type of tour you're taking, including comfortable hybrid bikes and e-bikes. Bike sizes are available for a range of heights. If you're particularly tall, short, or have any concerns about the bike, let us know when booking and we'll make sure we have the right equipment ready.
9. Do I need to be an experienced cyclist?
No. You don't need to have ridden a bike in years, and you certainly don't need to be a road cyclist. You should, however, be comfortable riding and stopping a bicycle in normal conditions. If you're nervous about cycling in cities, a guided tour is a great way to experience Japan because your guide takes care of the route and navigation.
10. Can I book a private tour?
Yes. Private tours are available in all of our destinations and are particularly popular with families, couples and groups of friends.
11. What happens if I have dietary requirements?
We're used to catering for visitors from all over the world. If your tour includes food, please let us know about vegetarian, vegan, allergy or other dietary requirements when you book. We'll do our best to accommodate you and make sure you know what to expect.
12. Do you ride all year?
Yes! Japan is a fantastic cycling destination throughout the year, and our tours operate in winter as well as the warmer months. The experience changes dramatically with the seasons — cherry blossoms in spring, lush green landscapes in summer, spectacular colours in autumn and crisp winter days.
